Once its dangerous spines are removed, the greater weever fish is not only edible but also quite tasty. Brave fishers catch and sell it to fish markets in southern Europe and Scandinavia and sometimes use it as bait to catch other fish. It is also caught accidentally by trawlers. Despite this, it is still abundant and widespread throughout its habitats.

What They Eat

The greater weever fish likes to bury itself in the sand, up to the eyeballs on top of its head. It hides like this, lying in wait to ambush unsuspecting prey. Preferring to feed at night, it eats other small fish and crustaceans such as shrimp.
